Australian Car Rental?

26 November, 2008 (10:57) | Car Rental Sydney | By: admin

We shall be looking to rent a car while on our travels at many of the main cities…Perth, Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney , Cairns. Should we pre book in the UK with one of the majors..or just turn up,…purchase a local newspaper and go from there ?
Thanks for all the varied answers….does anybody have access to any discount coupons/codes that I could use, as another thought ?

Always book a rental car in advance. It gives you better vehicle options and a much better price than just showing up at the car rental counter. The easiest way for you to reserve would be to book a car online with your preferred car rental agency. Check a booking site, like Travelocity to quickly compare companies, then go to that companies website directly, to see if you can find a deal or special with an even better rate.

Living expenses in Sydney area, Australia?

13 October, 2008 (09:24) | Car Rental Sydney | By: admin

What are average living costs per month
a) for a family of 4 (parents + 2 small children)?
b) for a single man?

How are rentals and wages/salaries paid - weekly or monthly?

What's a price of an average second hand car (not more than 5 years old)? Is petrol expensive?

The Average cost, not including Rent for a family of 4 is about AUD 400 per week. Salaries are normally paid direct into your Bank account.
Rental's vary hugely throughout Sydney, but a rough guide is Approx 350 per week, West of Parramatta, and getting more expensive as you get to the City or the Beach.
As you are asking about Petrol price, I would imagine you want an econimical car that also can carry 4 people, so I suggest either a Ford Futura/Fairmont, of a Holden, or Toyotal. A 4 year old car of htis type can be picked up from around AUD5,000 and cheaper at the Auctions. Petrol varies but about AUD1.40 L

Are there speed cameras in the Sydney Harbour Tunnel?

11 October, 2008 (06:48) | Car Rental Sydney | By: admin

A couple of years ago I was in Sydney and I had rented a car. I was driving in the Tunnel under Sydney Harbour and there was no traffic, So I was really moving, going maybe 150. Not like a child is going to run out in front of me (the reason why I don't normally drive fast, especially in residential areas.) or a cop would be hiding behind a tree, (The reason I don't normally drive really fast on the motorway.) there was nowhere for a cop to hide! Where I'm from the gov't hasn't got there act together at all. So things like speed cameras are non-existant. So, several months later I am in a bookstore where City Road runs into George street, across the street from the big mall where Kmart is and I see a book of maps of the city of Sydney that says on the cover that it labels where all the speed cameras in the city are located. This book says that there are cameras in the tunnel, but I didn't get a ticket? Maybe because it was a rental and they never sent me the ticket? What gives?
Response to tentofield: Don't know when I'll be in Sydney again, and yes I do consider myself lucky. I don't plan on doing that again when I AM in Sydney again. I just didn't even know that the cameras existed, and therefore I thought there was no way for the cops to catch me. What is the speed limit in the Sydney Harbour Tunnel, 90? I don't remember how fast I was going, maybe not quite 150, but I know I was going fast, at least 120. And it was relatively safe, because there was no traffic and I wasn't going fast enought to lose control.

There are permanent speed cameras in all the tunnels in Sydney - the Harbour Tunnel, the Eastern Distributor, the Lane Cove Tunnel and the Cross City Tunnel. If you speed, you will be caught. Consider yourself lucky. Don't try it again, your luck won't hold.

Sydney to Adelaide by road ?

7 October, 2008 (02:06) | Car Rental Sydney | By: admin

Question. Which way, West/East, or East/West ? Campervan or regular rental car + hotels ? (or are we (wife + self) taking on too much….this time next year?)Thanks for any advice. (First time visitors from the UK.)
Thankyou for all the replies to date.

Depends if you want to be cramped in a campervan although it's fun and I have done the caampervan thing. Lovely to stop when you want have a laze in the back and take your food with you. but by the time you pay for the campervan , petrol and caravan parks the price of a car [less fuel] and accomodation is a bit more comfortable. You will meet up with more people doing the campervan thing though. some accomodation can be pricey Take a look at the last minute deals at www.wotif.com.au If you do the rental car take a flask and a fold up esky with you for stops on the road. you can fill it up aat each motel stop and don't have to eat out all the time . We often go to the supermarket, buy a cooked chicken, coleslaw. fruit etc to have on the road. I would be driving the coastal route for some lovely scenery and from melbourne to Adelaide you would be driving the Great ocean Road which is beautiful then closer to adelaide you can go through the Mount lofty Ranges. No you won't be taking on to much you will have a lovely trip. Good luck

What's the driving like in Australia?

5 October, 2008 (04:22) | Car Rental Sydney | By: admin

I've come to New Zealand from the UK, and frankly, I am horrified by the driving here. People are screeching around corners they know nothing about at speeds that will surely kill them and anything they encounter there, should there be anything, and they just fly down the residential streets at speeds I'd be scared to do on divided motorways (and I lived in Germany for 13 years and know what it's like to travel at 200km/h).
I'm planning to visit Sydney in two weeks.
Do I need to bring tranquilizers and blindfolding gear and take a cab, or do you reckon I'll be OK with a rental car?

We are all stark bonkers on the roads. So much so that the death rate on Australian roads is among the lowest in the world.

Don't even think of speeding in Melbourne, Canberra or Sydney, there are speed cameras all over the place. In Melbourne there is no margin for error, Sydney cuts you a little slack. There is not a lot of lane discipline on multi-lane highways, you often get the bushie or pensioner or whatever tooling up the inside lane at 10kph less than the rest of the traffic.

There are crazy rules about signaling on roundabouts, in most cases by the time your turn signals start to work you are out of the roundabout. Most people very sensibly ignore them unless the roundabout is physically large.

If you see a car on your right at an intersection signaling a left turn, don't assume the driver is going to turn left. The driver might be a dozy b@stard and left it on. When you see the front wheels change direction then you know that they are actually going to turn. I have had three near misses from this in the past few years so I'm suspicious now. Bloody f%ckwits.

Some people in very small towns, both pedestrian and driver do not have a lot of road sense.

Transportation options from Sydney to Halifax?

3 October, 2008 (01:22) | Car Rental Sydney | By: admin

I will be visiting Cape Breton this summer for a family reunion, and need to get from Sydney to Halifax (one way). What transportation options are available? It would cost over $200 to rent a car with the $150 one-way rental penalty. I'm looking for any more affordable options.

Thanks for the help!

rental cars??

1 October, 2008 (01:26) | Car Rental Sydney | By: admin

Im going to Sydney next year for school and i need to get a rental car but im under 21. Are there any other options i have to getting a car?

Truth be told to u. there really are`nt any options. all rental agencies require you to be 21 or older, and some even say you have to be 25 or older. now if u were military and u were 18 some agencies might let u rent a vehicle but maybe like 10% of them, and also depending on the situtation. good luck on your search.

Best Way To Travel From Sydney to Cairns?

29 September, 2008 (00:28) | Car Rental Sydney | By: admin

I will be travelling this route from 19th Jan 2008 to 9 Feb 2008 and was looking to possibly follow this itinery:

Cairns for - 2 nights
Mission beach - 1 night
Airlie beach & whitsunday islands - 2 nights
Hervey bay & fraser island - 2 nights
Noosa - 2 night
Brisbane - 1 nights
Surfers Paradice - 2 nights
Byron Bay - 2 nights
Coffs Harbour - 1 night
Port Macquarie - 1 night
Port stephens - 1 night
Sydney - 3 nights

Its one of three options

Car rental and hotels
Campervan

Will I really have the time to travel all that distance or will I need to fly some of the way?

Loads of time but it seems like you are ticking off all the main attractions along the way. My advice is to relax so you can allow time to enjoy your visit. Sail around around the Whitsundays. Try a 3 or 4 day stay at a farm inland from Rockhampton, thats if you like horses, quad bikes, the outback, pet kangaroos, herding cattle, and sleeping under the stars. From your itinery mabe not. Anyway enjoy your trip.
