Sydney to Adelaide by road ?
Question. Which way, West/East, or East/West ? Campervan or regular rental car + hotels ? (or are we (wife + self) taking on too much….this time next year?)Thanks for any advice. (First time visitors from the UK.)
Thankyou for all the replies to date.
Depends if you want to be cramped in a campervan although it's fun and I have done the caampervan thing. Lovely to stop when you want have a laze in the back and take your food with you. but by the time you pay for the campervan , petrol and caravan parks the price of a car [less fuel] and accomodation is a bit more comfortable. You will meet up with more people doing the campervan thing though. some accomodation can be pricey Take a look at the last minute deals at www.wotif.com.au If you do the rental car take a flask and a fold up esky with you for stops on the road. you can fill it up aat each motel stop and don't have to eat out all the time . We often go to the supermarket, buy a cooked chicken, coleslaw. fruit etc to have on the road. I would be driving the coastal route for some lovely scenery and from melbourne to Adelaide you would be driving the Great ocean Road which is beautiful then closer to adelaide you can go through the Mount lofty Ranges. No you won't be taking on to much you will have a lovely trip. Good luck

West to East (Adelaide to Sydney) will mean the prevailing winds are behind you. With something as bulky as a campervan there could be a real fuel saving here. It will also mean that you are driving toward the sunrise so (unless you are early risers) the sun is less likely to be shining into your eyes.
Campervans have advantages, but they can be restrictive if you want to get off the beaten track.

Do Sydney to Melbourne then Melbourne to Adelaide. You will then be driving on the left side of the Great Ocean Road for the views.Dependent upon how long you are coming for you could stop at great places along the route. Sydney to Melbourne is about 10 hours in total and around the same for Melbourne to Adelaide. Contact the Melbourne Visitor Centre Federation Square Melbourne and ask them to forward the free Sydney to Melbourne and Melbourne to Adelaide map. Theses will help you research the places on the way on the internet Some great places to see along the way are
Syd-Melb: Lakes Entrance, Wilson's Prom or take a detour and visit Bechworth, Ned Kelly country.
Melb-Adelaide: Call at Lorne, Do the tree top walk between Lorne and Apollo Bay,stop at Kennet river to see Koala's in the trees, Twelve Apostles, Loch Ard and London Bridge. There is also a beautiful pink salt lake, stop at Mount Gambier for the Blue Lagoon, and visit Hahndorf just before Adelaide. Lots to do in Melbourne and Adelaide so allow some time there and do Sovereign Hill at Ballarat and the Barossa Valley in Adelaide too.
Lots more to do along the route and will be a fantastic holiday

Head west from Sydney until you get to Broken Hill. Nice Little town. When you get there you will find they import a lot from Adelaide. The trip is well signed (south) from there and the roads are good. Some are very very straight and needs attention while driving.

Go west (leaving Sydney). Trip is approx. 850-=860 miles. Travel time about 17+ hours..
Using your computer, go to your MSN homepage and go to MAPS and DIRECTIONS. This will provide you with the entire route and help you plan your trip.
You can also go to Microsoft Virtual Earth.
Hope that you and your wife enjoy your holiday, mate.
